Description
Trifasciata Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia trifasciata), also known as the Banded Rainbowfish, is a vibrant and active species.
Appearance
- Coloration: Varies depending on the location, but generally features a distinct dark mid-lateral band with bright red or yellow dorsal, anal, and caudal fins
- Size: Can grow up to 15 cm (about 6 inches)
Habitat and Tank Requirements
- Natural Habitat: Found in a variety of freshwater habitats in northern Australia and Queensland, including rivers, lagoons, and slow-moving streams
- Tank Size: Requires a spacious tank, at least 110 liters (29 gallons).
- Water Conditions: Prefers temperatures between 24-33C (75-91F) and slightly alkaline water (pH 6.5-8.0)
- Tank Setup: A well-planted aquarium with areas of dense vegetation and open swimming spaces is ideal. They thrive with moderate water flow.
Behavior and Compatibility
- Schooling: Best kept in groups of six or more to reduce skittishness and encourage natural behavior
- Tank Mates: Compatible with other peaceful, similarly sized fish such as other rainbowfish, characins, danios, and barbs

- Difficulty: Relatively easy to care for, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists
