Stratiotes Aloides, otherwise known as the pond Water Soldier, is an unusual native plant with long, narrow and serrated leaves. Stratiotes Aloides like to have their roots in contact with the soil or mulm on the base of the pond (Mulm is also called detritus – the organic debris that builds up in and on the pond substrate).

Most ponds containing Stratiotes Water Soldiers seem to have clear water, so they must be beneficial to water clarity, although their oxygenating qualities are unproven. Allow water soldiers to die back naturally, old plants will rot away and the young plants rise to the surface the following spring to bear small white flowers, starting the cycle all over again.
